|The Ravenna City Police Department patrol division is comprised of 21 highly trained road officers who are responsible for keeping our roadways safe and protecting the public. On average, our officers answer approximately 1700 calls for service each month. These calls range from lockouts and barking dog complaints to burglaries, robberies, assaults, and homicides. Regardless of the need, our officers are here to serve the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Technology plays an increasing roll in law enforcement today, and our officers are equipped with some of the latest technology available. Each vehicle is equipped with a Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) which allows our Communications Center to communicate silently with each officer, to dispatch officers electronically, and allow officers to access a wealth of information from local, state, and national, and in some cases international databases. A robust mapping application plots each and every call on an electronic map and also tracks each officer's location. This greatly enhances response times in that the Communications Officer always knows which officer is closest to a call.
As with any municipality, illegal drug activity is a major concern. Such activity always seems to spawn other criminal activity such as theft, burglary, robbery and assaults. Law Enforcement has always known that if you can control the drug activity the overall crime rate will drop. Our road patrol division is our front line in the war on drugs and as a result road patrol officers are acutely aware and "in-tune" with the ever changing drug "scene" in our community. Daily patrol activities are a key element to gathering intelligence which can ultimately be used to build solid cases and remove drug dealers and other criminals from our streets. Unfortunately, drug dealers (and criminals in general) aren't bound by the same jurisdictional constraints affecting road patrol Officers. Recognizing this, the Ravenna Police Department partners with the Department of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms as well as the United States Marshal's Offices, providing one Ravenna City Police officer to each of these multi-jurisdictional enforcement agencies on a regular basis. This arrangement is a win-win situation for all involved. By partnering with these multi-jurisdictional agencies we effectively extend our reach in the enforcement of criminals who rarely limit their activity to one jurisdiction. We also gain valuable resources in both manpower and expertise through our partnerships with these professional and dedicated agencies.
Our road officers face many challenges. One such challenge is keeping our roadways safe by apprehending impaired drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. We have a ZERO tolerance policy for impaired driving within our City and we actively look for impaired drivers during routine patrols. To aid in our success in this area, our officers all receive advanced training in detecting impaired drivers and our DUI arrest rates are consistently among the highest in the County.
Despite whatever task or challenge may be facing any of our officers at any particular moment, we always strive to follow one very important code ... We exist by the authority of the citizens of Ravenna and we are here to "serve and protect" those citizens.
It's a responsibility we take very seriously and we are honored to be entrusted in that role.
