City of Ravenna - Mulch Program

The process:

Throughout the year, city crews pick up yard waste such as grass clippings, branches, shrubs and leaves throughout the City. These items are taken to the city's composting facility on E. Lake St. and are stored in individual areas based on type of waste. Some items, such as waste in biodegradable yard bags are periodically "turned" by front end loader throughout the year. This process speeds the bio-degrading processes, turning the material into compost.

Once each year the City contracts with a company to bring a tub grinder on site, processing all the yard waste collected in the past year into much for distribution.

The result is two types of mulch, leaf mulch and wood mulch, which is then distributed to City Residents.

Leaf Mulch Lightweight, almost the consistency of rich soil, tomatos and other garden vegetables thrive when this is mixed in with their soil.	Wood Mulch Good for landscape mulch applications around flower beds, shrubs, etc.

Distribution:

Each Spring, the City sets a date, or dates, for residents (proof is required) to come to the composting site to pick up leaf mulch, wood mulch, or both. The city crews will load the material into the resident's trucks, trailers, etc. (Note: only safe vehicles will be loaded). For smaller amounts, residents are able to bring garbage containers or other smaller containers which they can load themselves by hand shovel. There is no limit on the amount, however proof of residency is required and re-sale or commercial use of the material is prohibited. Pickup is only allowed during the designated time(s) advertised each spring. Those times will be posted in the newspaper (www.recordpub.com) and on this web site in advance.
